Ants are social insects that belong to the same biological order as bees and wasps.
Each ant is a member of a highly organised colony which can be millions of insects. Inside
a single nest, there are workers, soldiers, drones and queens and colonies of ants can
occupy and use a wide area of land to support them.
Worker ants will often enter dwellings foraging for food, particularly sweet sugary
substances. Although they are not a risk to human health, they can be present in sufficient
numbers to cause a nuisance. The ants will almost certainly be coming from several nests so
locating one nest and destroying that will have a limited effect.
